Shooting At South Carolina State University Leaves Two Dead

Two men were killed and another wounded in a shooting at South Carolina State University’s Hugine Suites housing complex Thursday night, prompting an eight-hour campus lockdown and class cancellations for Friday (February 14).

The incident occurred inside a residence hall room around 9:15 p.m., according to a statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). One victim died at the scene while another succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The condition of the third wounded man has not been disclosed.

University officials have not confirmed whether any of the victims were students, with Sam Watson, the school’s director of university relations, indicating updates would be provided later Friday.

The campus, located in Orangeburg about 40 miles south of Columbia, was placed under lockdown shortly after the shooting. Authorities lifted the restriction around 5 a.m. Friday morning but canceled all classes for the day. The university is making counselors available to students affected by the tragedy.

This marks the second deadly shooting incident at the historically Black university this academic year. In October, one person was killed and two others were injured during homecoming weekend celebrations, though none were students.

SLED continues to investigate the shooting, including potential motives.
