Second Teen Convicted in Brutal Killing of Oxnard Man Outside Church

A second teenager has been convicted in the brutal beating death of a 67-year-old man outside an Oxnard church, bringing the year-long juvenile murder case closer to a conclusion.

According to reporting by KTLA, a Ventura County juvenile court judge found the now-16-year-old guilty of willful, deliberate and premeditated first-degree murder in the death of Davy Glen Pichel.

The attack happened on June 4, 2025, when both suspects were 14 years old. Prosecutors said surveillance video showed Pichel sitting near his wheelchair outside St. Anthony’s Catholic Church when the two boys approached and violently beat and stomped him. Authorities said the teens briefly walked away before returning to continue the assault, and investigators believe they removed some of Pichel’s clothing before fleeing.

A church volunteer found Pichel’s body the following day. He had suffered severe head and facial injuries and was partially unclothed.

The first teen pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in January and received the maximum seven-year commitment to California’s Secured Youth Treatment Facility.

The second teen is scheduled to be sentenced July 13 at the Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard, where he also faces a maximum seven-year commitment.

“Today’s verdict ensures that both juveniles have now been held accountable for Mr. Pichel’s murder,” Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said. “While no court outcome can restore the life that was taken, we hope this result provides Mr. Pichel’s loved ones with a measure of justice.”

Under California law, juveniles convicted of murder can be committed to a Secured Youth Treatment Facility for four to seven years, and juvenile court jurisdiction generally ends when an offender turns 25.
