`The Pitt’ Tops Emmy Nominations; `Hacks’ Sets Record for Comedy Series

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CNS) – It was a big morning for HBO Max Wednesday, with reigning outstanding drama series winner “The Pitt” nominated for a leading 25 Emmy Awards, while the recently concluded “Hacks” collected 24 nods, a new record for comedy series.

“Hacks,” which completed its run May 28, has now been nominated for outstanding series in each of its five seasons, winning in 2024. The 24 overall nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards it received Wednesday topped the single-year record of 23, set by “The Bear” in 2024 and matched by “The Studio” last year.

Also nominated for outstanding comedy series were ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” HBO’s “The Bear,” Apple TV’s “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Apple TV’s “Shrinking” and Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay.”

Last year’s winner, the Apple TV Hollywood satire “The Studio” did not air any new episodes during eligibility period, June 1, 2025-May 31, 2026.

Looking to unseat “The Pitt” in the drama series category will be Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” Hulu’s “Paradise,” and Apple TV’s “Pluribus,” “Slow Horses,” and “Your Friends & Neighbors.”

No series from a major broadcast network has been nominated in the drama series category since the NBC family drama “This Is Us” in 2019. A series from the major broadcast networks has not won since Fox’s “24” in 2006.

Nominations for outstanding limited or anthology series went to Peacock’s “All Her Faults,” Netflix’s “The Beast in Me,” Netflix’s “Beef,” HBO’s “DTF St. Louis,” and FX/Hulu’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.”

For lead actress in a drama series, nominations went to Carrie Boon for “The Gilded Age,” Chase Infiniti for Hulu’s “The Testaments,” Keri Russell for “The Diplomat,” Rhea Seehorn for “Pluribus” and Zendaya for HBO’s “Euphoria.”

Lead drama actor nominations went to Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses,” Mark Ruffalo for HBO’s “Task,” Rufus Sewell for “The Diplomat” and Noah Wyle for “The Pitt.”

“Hacks” star Jean Smart was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. It was her 15th career Emmy nomination across all categories. She has seven previous wins. Quinta Brunson was nominated for “Abbott Elementary,” and she was also nominated for her writing on the series, bringing her to 15 career nominations, with two career wins. Lisa Kudrow of HBO’s “The Comeback” also earned a nod. Rounding out the comedy series actress category were Ayo Edebiri of “The Bear” and Elle Fanning of “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.”

Kudrow was also nominated for her writing on “The Comeback,” bringing her to 17 career Emmy nominations, with just one win.

Nominated for lead actor in a comedy series were Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Disney+’s “Wonder Man,” Steve Carell for HBO’s “Rooster,” Matthew Rhys for “Widow’s Bay,” Jason Segal for “Shrinking” and Martin Short for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”

The nomination for Short, who also received nods for producing “Only Murders” and for hosting “Match Game,” now has 23 overall Emmy nominations. He has two career wins.

Rhys could potentially be a double-acting winner. He was also nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series for “The Beast in Me.” Also nominated in the category for Riz Ahmed for Prime Video’s “Bait,” Jason Bateman for Netflix’s “Black Rabbit,” Charlie Hunnam for Netflix’s “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” and Oscar Isaac for “Beef.”

Hollywood royalty Sally Field was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series for her work in Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” Also nominated were Claire Danes for “The Beast in Me,” Carey Mulligan for “Beef,” Sarah Pidgeon for “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,” and Sarah Snook for “All Her Fault.”

Peacock’s “The Traitors,” which was won the award for outstanding reality competition program each of the past two years, was nominated again in the category. Also scoring nominations in the category were MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Bravo’s “Top Chef,” CBS’ “Survivor” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

Notably absent from the list was CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” which was previously nominated 22 times in the 23 years the category existed. It was nominated in each of the first 17 years, was not eligible in 2020 because CBS did not air a new season during the eligibility period, then nominated again each of the last four years. It is a 10-time winner, including each of the first seven.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” was nominated for the 10th consecutive year, while the nod for “Top Chef” is its 20th straight. “Survivor” is now a nine- time nominee.

CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which recently ended its run, was nominated for outstanding variety series, along with Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

“Saturday Night Live,” which recently marked its 50th anniversary, now has 359 overall Emmy nominations, with 98 wins.

Emmy-winning actors Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller announced the nominees in the top categories Wednesday morning at the Wolf Theatre in the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center at its North Hollywood headquarters.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego hosted the ceremony.
