Veteran journalist Katie Couric has revealed she experienced a sudden and frightening episode of memory loss known as transient global amnesia (TGA) while attending the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado on Saturday, June 27. According to Couric, she was unable to recall the current month, year, or who was president, mistakenly believing it was 2024 and that Joe Biden was president, despite being in 2026.
Couric described the experience in a Substack post titled The Day I’ll Never Remember, sharing that she could not remember participating in two panels at the festival and repeatedly asked her husband, John Molner, and hospital staff the same questions. Initial concerns led doctors to check for signs of a stroke, but an MRI ruled that out. She was then diagnosed with TGA, a rare condition causing temporary but severe short-term memory loss without affecting self-awareness or identity.
According to the National Institutes of Health, transient global amnesia affects three to eight people per 100,000 each year, with the rate increasing among those aged 50 and older. Patients typically experience sudden episodes where they cannot form new memories or recall recent events, though they remain alert and able to recognize loved ones. Most cases resolve within 24 hours and rarely recur.
Experts, such as neurologist David Perlmutter, told Couric that the cause of TGA remains unclear but is sometimes linked to physical or emotional stress, sudden temperature changes, or migraines. Couric’s symptoms cleared by late evening, though she cannot remember several hours of that day.
Doctors advise that anyone who experiences sudden memory loss, confusion, or stroke-like symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Couric expressed relief that the episode was not more serious but acknowledged that “several hours of a Saturday in June will always be missing” for her. The risk of another TGA episode is low, but not impossible.
