A Utah woman, Kouri Richins, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Wednesday (May 13) for the murder of her husband, Eric Richins. The 36-year-old was convicted in March of poisoning her husband with a fentanyl-laced cocktail in 2022. Richins, who wrote a children’s book about grief following her husband’s death, showed no emotion as the judge in Park City delivered the sentence.
Richins addressed her three sons during the sentencing, apologizing and proclaiming her innocence. She accused Eric’s family of preventing her from contacting her children. “I promise you, boys, one day it will be over,” she said, according to NBC News.
Eric Richins died with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system. Prosecutors argued that Kouri Richins was motivated by financial gain, as she had taken out life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge and was deeply in debt. The couple’s children, who were ages nine, seven, and five at the time of their father’s death, expressed fear of their mother in victim impact statements.
The case drew significant attention when Richins was arrested in 2023 while promoting her book, “Are You With Me?”, which was intended to help her children cope with their father’s death. According to The Guardian, the book was later removed from Amazon.
Richins’ defense team plans to appeal the conviction, arguing that the evidence was insufficient. Despite the possibility of the death penalty, prosecutors did not pursue it, citing family dynamics and the complexities of the case.
