Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest person, is celebrating her 117th birthday today (Friday, August 21). Residing at Hallmark Lakeview Care Home in Lightwater, Surrey, Caterham has lived through significant historical events, including both World Wars and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, she has seen six British monarchs, with Charles III being the current king.
Caterham became the oldest living person in April 2025, following the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas. Her secret to longevity is simple: “Never arguing with anyone, I listen, and I do what I like,” she shared with The Independent.
This year has been filled with “many firsts” for Caterham, including meeting King Charles III and holding his hand. Reflecting on the encounter, she recalled watching his investiture as the Prince of Wales in 1969. “All the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you,” she told the King.
Caterham’s life journey includes working as an au pair in India and setting up a nursery school in Hong Kong. She married Lieutenant Colonel Norman Caterham in 1931, who passed away in 1976. Despite personal losses, including the deaths of her two daughters, Caterham continues to find joy in life.
As she celebrates with family and friends, Caterham looks forward to what the next year will bring. Although she is five years short of the record for the oldest person ever, held by Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122, Caterham remains optimistic and full of life.
