Sanders Endorses Nixon For U.S. Senate In Florida

Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, has endorsed Florida Democratic socialist Angie Nixon in her bid for the U.S. Senate. On Thursday (August 20), Sanders praised Nixon as a candidate who will fight for working people and challenge the “greed of the billionaire class.” Nixon, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, secured a surprising victory in the Democratic primary earlier this week, defeating Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council aide known for his role in President Trump’s first impeachment.

Nixon will face Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody in the upcoming November election. Moody was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in January 2025 to fill the seat vacated by Marco Rubio when he joined the president’s Cabinet. Despite the challenges of running in a red state, Sanders believes Nixon’s campaign represents the future of the Democratic Party.

According to The Hill, Sanders stated, “Angie Nixon is proof that organized people can take on organized money — and win.” He highlighted Nixon’s grassroots support and her ability to connect with diverse voter demographics, including Black voters, young voters, and those without a college degree.

Nixon’s campaign has been marked by her progressive platform, advocating for policies like Medicare for All and affordable housing. As reported by Politico, she has distanced herself from specific socialist labels but remains committed to fighting for working-class Americans.

Despite being outspent in the primary, Nixon’s victory over Vindman was decisive, winning by 12 points. Her campaign has since gained momentum, raising $1 million in just 48 hours after the primary. However, she faces an uphill battle against Moody, who has a significant financial advantage and strong Republican support in Florida.

Nixon expressed her gratitude for Sanders’ endorsement, stating, “Senator Bernie Sanders has been a champion for working people his entire career, and I’m proud to have stood alongside him in 2016 and to carry that fight forward today.” The endorsement places the Florida Senate race in the national spotlight as both candidates prepare for the November election.
