Trump Flies Old Air Force One Home, Sends New Jet To U.K. For Troop Tours

President Donald Trump is returning to the United States aboard the older Air Force One aircraft after a high-profile trip to Turkey, while the newly unveiled, Qatari-donated presidential jet heads to Europe for U.S. military personnel to tour. The decision comes amid ongoing speculation about security risks linked to recent threats from Iran, but President Trump has publicly dismissed suggestions that safety is the main reason for the switch.

According to Fox News, President Trump explained the new Air Force One, a $400 million Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar and outfitted with advanced defense systems, will be shown off at multiple European bases, including Mildenhall Air Force Base in the United Kingdom. “We are sending the brand new, and truly spectacular, Air Force One to Mildenhall Air Force Base, in the United Kingdom, to give [U.S. troops] a chance to tour the Aircraft,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Wednesday. “For old time’s sake, we’ll be taking the former Air Force One, from Turkey to Mildenhall, a short trip that is totally worth doing in order to give our Great Military Heroes a chance to appreciate our beautiful new addition to the Air Force Fleet!”

While fielding questions from reporters about Iranian assassination threats, President Trump acknowledged, “the life of a president is very dangerous,” and said he is “No. 1 on the kill list for Iran,” but insisted his choice to use the older plane was not based on security worries. “I don’t really care about the threats or danger, because I’m doing my job,” Trump said during his remarks, as reported by Fox News.

The new Air Force One completed its maiden voyage last month and was used for a domestic flight to North Dakota. The plane, which was previously owned by Qatar, was retrofitted for presidential use at a conversion cost estimated at $1 billion, according to the Guardian. Critics from both parties have raised concerns over the ethics and cost of accepting such a gift, though the White House has maintained all procedures were legal and the upgrade was necessary.

The Qatari gift is intended as a temporary solution until the next generation of purpose-built presidential jets is delivered, expected in 2027 and 2028. According to PBS NewsHour, after President Trump leaves office, ownership of the new aircraft will reportedly transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation.

As the older Air Force One returns President Trump home, the new aircraft’s tour of European bases is expected to boost morale among U.S. troops stationed abroad. No changes to presidential travel security protocols have been announced.
