Passenger Plane Carrying 62 People Crashes In Brazil

A passenger plane carrying 58 passengers and four crew members crashed in Brazil on Friday (August 9). The two-engine ATR 72 took off from Cascavel, Brazil, and was heading to the São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport.

According to ABC News, the plane crashed near a residential area in the city of Vinhedo, which is about 60 miles from Sao Paulo. Several buildings were struck by the plane, and at least one person in those buildings was injured.

A dramatic video posted on Instagram showed the plane spinning in circles as it fell out of the sky.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed the crash during an event and asked for a moment of silence for the victims.

“I would like everyone to stand up so that we can observe a minute of silence because a plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in São Paulo, with 58 passengers and four crew members, and it appears they all died,” he said, according to CNN.

Investigators have not determined what caused the plane to crash.

“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board,” Voepass Airlines said in a statement.
