Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman has surged past reality TV star Spencer Pratt in the city’s mayoral primary election.
As of Sunday, Raman holds 27.1% of the votes, while Pratt follows closely with 26.7%, according to the latest tally from the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder. This marks a significant turnaround for Raman, who was trailing Pratt earlier in the week.
The primary race has been a tight contest between incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, Raman, and Pratt. Bass remains in the lead with 34.81% of the vote, securing her spot in the November runoff. The race for the second spot has been highly competitive, with Raman and Pratt vying for the chance to challenge Bass in the general election.
Pratt, a former reality TV personality, has been making his first bid for elected office. Despite his initial lead, Raman’s recent gains have put her in a favorable position. According to NBC Los Angeles, political analysts believe the trends are in Raman’s favor to maintain her lead over Pratt.
The election has drawn significant attention due to the diverse backgrounds and platforms of the candidates. Issues such as homelessness, housing affordability, and public safety have been central to the campaigns. Pratt’s campaign has faced challenges, including criticism over his lack of political experience and his alignment with Republican ideals in a predominantly Democratic city.
As the vote count continues, the final results will determine whether Raman or Pratt will face Bass in the November runoff. With a few thousand ballots yet to be counted, the outcome remains uncertain.
The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder has until July 10 to certify the election results.
