Australia-Bound Delta Flight Returns to LAX Due to Smoke on Board

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – An Australia-bound Delta flight was re-routed back to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff this weekend after smoke was detected on board.

Flight DL43 en route to Sydney was scheduled to take off at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, but less than an hour later it landed back in LAX safely, according to multiple media reports.

The smoke was detected in the galley area, which serves as a kitchen for food and drinks to be stored or prepared. The flight was ultimately canceled.

In a statement issued to news outlets, Delta officials said the safety of passengers was of utmost priority.

“That’s why the flight crew followed established procedures to return to Los Angeles (LAX) after smoke was detected in the galley,” Delta said. “We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels.”

No injuries were reported.
