Balin Miller, a 23-year-old mountaineer from Anchorage, Alaska, tragically died earlier this week while climbing Yosemite’s El Capitan. Miller, known for his daring ascents and vibrant personality, was attempting the challenging “Sea of Dreams” route when the accident occurred. According to CNN, Miller’s mother, Jeanine Moorman, confirmed his death and expressed her heartbreak over the loss of her son, describing him as “a true wild card at heart.”
The accident happened as Miller was descending to fix a stuck gear bag. Witnesses, including Yosemite photographer Tom Evans, reported that Miller rappelled off the end of his rope, a common yet preventable mistake. The incident was reportedly livestreamed on TikTok, where Miller was affectionately known as the “orange tent guy” for his distinctive camping gear. The Los Angeles Times reported that park rangers arrived shortly after the accident, despite the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Miller was a rising star in the climbing community, having completed impressive routes in Patagonia and the Sierra Nevada. His solo ascent of the Slovak Direct route on Denali in June brought him significant recognition. Known for his adventurous spirit, Miller often wore silver glitter on his cheekbones during climbs, likening it to a warrior’s battle makeup. Climbing.com highlighted his achievements and his passion for climbing, which he pursued while living a nomadic lifestyle.
