Undocumented Families in California Urged to Prepare Amid ICE Raids

As immigration enforcement increases across California, questions are being raised about how undocumented families are affected.

California is home to an estimated 1.8 million undocumented immigrants, one of the largest such populations in the country. Recent reports of ICE operations in cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and the Central Valley have drawn attention to the challenges families face when detentions and deportations occur.

Family law specialist Alphonse Provenziano says immigration status is sometimes used in custody or divorce disputes, adding another layer of difficulty for families navigating the legal system. Reports have also noted that children may end up in state protective care when parents are detained, highlighting the potential impact on family stability.

Provenziano emphasized that these issues reflect broader uncertainties surrounding policy shifts and enforcement priorities, which continue to shape the experiences of undocumented communities across California. He spoke with KFI’s Heather Brooker and explained what families in these situations can do to prepare before they are faced with a crisis and their kids are left unprotected.
