City Of Stanton Moves To Ban ‘Whippets’ For Recreational Use

Retailers in Stanton, California, may soon be prohibited from selling nitrous oxide, commonly known as whippets, for recreational use. The city council voted unanimously on Tuesday to introduce an ordinance that would ban the sale of whippets except for specific uses such as medical, dental, automotive, or food-related applications. This proposal follows a similar law passed by Orange County Supervisors in February, which also prohibits the recreational sale of nitrous oxide.

If the ordinance is enacted, retailers violating the law could face fines of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both. Additionally, violators risk having their business licenses revoked. According to a staff report, the ordinance aims to close a loophole in state law that allows the sale of nitrous oxide without verifying its intended use.

City Clerk Patricia Vazquez emphasized that the ordinance is a response to public health concerns, as nitrous oxide poses several health risks, including nerve damage and mental health issues. Councilman John Warren supported the measure, citing instances of young adults abusing the substance.

The ordinance is expected to undergo a second vote before becoming law. If approved, it will take effect 30 days after adoption. Stanton has already informed local smoke shops about the impending ban, and many have begun signing agreements to comply with the new regulations.
