The Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by conductor Gustavo Dudamel, is set to make history with its debut at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend and next. This marks the first time a major orchestra will perform its own set at the renowned Indio music festival, sharing the lineup with artists like Lady Gaga, Green Day, and Post Malone.
According to LAist, the performance, dubbed “Gustavo’s mixtape,” will feature iconic pieces of classical music alongside surprise guest appearances from artists of various musical backgrounds. Meghan Umber, chief programming officer, explained that Dudamel believes “all music is great music, and that classical music belongs at a festival like Coachella.” Confirmed guests include EDM DJ Zedd and Icelandic singer Laufey.
This performance is particularly significant for Dudamel, who is in his final year as the LA Phil’s music and artistic director before transitioning to the New York Philharmonic in September. Umber shared that performing at Coachella was a “bucket list” item for Dudamel, representing the culmination of his 17-year tenure with the orchestra.
The LA Phil will perform at the Outdoor Theatre from 6:25 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on both weekends. For those unable to attend in person, the performance will be available via a livestream.
