Yet Another National Discount Retailer Closing All Stores

Right now is not an ideal time to be a discount retailer. Big Lots recently went bankrupt, as did 99 Cents Only stores, Dirt Cheap and Treasure Hunt. Meanwhile, Family Dollar is closing 1,000 locations, a bunch of TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores are shuttering, so are some Kohl’s stores, and there are only a couple Kmarts left in the country, down from 2,000. Now, yet another discount retailer will be closing all of their stores across the country.

Bargain Hunt is expected to have all of their 91 locations in ten states shuttered by next month. Last week, Essex Technology Group, which owns Bargain Hunt, filed paperwork with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development giving them notice that they will be permanently closing their distribution center. In the notice, they stated plans to terminate employees through March 14. It seems to be just the start since on Friday, Bloomberg reported that the company could file for bankruptcy as soon as in the coming days. Then, on Saturday, the company sent emails to members of its loyalty program promoting storewide sales of up to 30% off all items with “nothing held back,” seemingly indicating liquidation.

Atlanta Tomorrow’s News Today called around to local stores and learned that March 14 would be the last day stores will be open. It’s sad news for fans of the chain, which first opened in 2004 when it was known by its original name, Essex Bargain Hunt. Much of their merchandise is made up of overstock items from Target and other big box retailers, plus “Crazy Bin Sales” which are products returned to Amazon.
