Wildfire Prevention Efforts Underway in Bommer Canyon

Wildfires in the United States are often sparked by human activities, with nearly 90% of them starting from causes like discarded cigarettes, unattended campfires, and equipment malfunctions. In California, power lines and arson are significant contributors to these fires. Open spaces near urban areas, such as Bommer Canyon in Irvine, California, are particularly vulnerable to wildfires. To combat this risk, a restoration project is currently underway in Bommer Canyon, aiming to prevent wildfires before they start.

The restoration efforts, which began in August 2023, involve planting and watering 9,000 container plants across sixteen native species. The project is funded by a $1 million grant from the California Natural Resources Agency to the City of Irvine, with support from California State Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. The goal is to reduce wildfire risk by replacing invasive plants, like Black Mustard, with native species that are less likely to ignite and spread fire.

According to Voice of OC, the project will conclude in March 2026, but the Irvine Ranch Conservancy (IRC) will continue managing the site for five more years. The efforts include creating natural fire breaks and planting Willow and Mulefat shrubs along drainageways to maintain a damp environment, reducing the spread of potential wildfires.

OC Fire Authority Captain Greg Barta noted that while Irvine and Orange County are well-prepared for wildfires, the increasing frequency and intensity of fires mean that no area is entirely “fireproof.” Continuous adaptation through stricter building codes, enhanced technology, and resident preparedness is essential.

Bommer Canyon is part of the Irvine Open Space Preserve, which includes nearly 30 miles of trails and connects with Crystal Cove State Park and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. The restoration project will not impact public access to Bommer Canyon, ensuring that recreational activities can continue as planned.
