White House Placing All Government DEI Employees On Paid Leave

The White House has ordered all federal employees working in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs to be placed on administrative leave by Wednesday (January 22). The directive, issued by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), is part of President Donald Trump‘s initiative to dismantle DEI offices and programs across the federal government. The move follows executive orders signed by Trump on Monday, which aim to end what he calls “radical and wasteful” DEI programs.

According to a memorandum from OPM acting director Charles Ezell, federal agencies must inform DEI employees of their leave status and prepare plans for layoffs or reassignment. By next Friday, agency heads are required to submit a written plan for executing a “reduction-in-force action” for DEI office employees. The memorandum also instructs agencies to remove DEI-related websites and social media accounts.

Trump’s orders undo previous executive orders from the Biden administration, which promoted diversity and equity within federal agencies. Trump has criticized these programs as “illegal and immoral discrimination.”

The directive also impacts affirmative action in federal contracting, aiming to restore “merit-based” hiring practices. Agencies must cancel DEI-related training and contracts and report any attempts to disguise DEI programs within ten days.

The White House states that this action is part of a broader effort to ensure government resources are used effectively and equitably. The directive is expected to face legal challenges and criticism from DEI advocates.
