LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A broken water main opened a hole in the pavement Tuesday in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles, damaging at least one car.
The break occurred about 2:40 a.m. in an 8-inch line near the intersection of First Street and Detroit Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Water could be seen gurgling up from a hole in the pavement and flowing down the street.
Crews shut down the flow of water and set about fixing the line, with an estimated time of repair of 4 p.m., a department spokeswoman said.
Only one customer’s service was interrupted, but First Street was closed between Detroit and La Brea Avenue and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes, she said.
A woman who lives in the area showed reporters at the scene that water had gotten into her vehicle, which parked near the location of the break. Savannah Boyd said she plans to file a damages claim with the LADWP.
The leak came in the wake of a July 16 water main break in a 36-inch line near the intersection of Sunset and Holloway Drive in West Hollywood that damaged numerous vehicles while flooding underground parking areas, businesses and at least one residence.
That leak and repairs, which were performed round the clock, shut down a stretch of the Sunset Strip until Friday.
