A woman from Stevenson Ranch was hospitalized after a rattlesnake bit her while she tended to her garden on Saturday.
Linda Martin described how the snake leaped from her rose bushes, interrupting her evening routine of trimming roses. “I went and lifted the bush, and that’s when I saw the rattler,” Martin recounted.
This incident is part of a worrying trend in California, where rattlesnake bites have surged this year. The California Poison Control System (CPCS) has reported a significant increase in rattlesnake encounters, with 77 calls already received this year, as detailed by KTLA. Typically, CPCS receives around 200 calls annually. This year, three encounters have resulted in fatalities, which is unusual for the state.

The rise in snakebites has led to increased awareness efforts. Dr. Emily Taylor, a snake researcher from California Polytechnic State University, explained to Backpacker that booming rodent populations and rising temperatures have contributed to the early snake activity. She advises people to respect rattlesnakes and maintain a safe distance if encountered.
Residents are urged to exercise caution during outdoor activities, especially in areas where rattlesnakes are common. If bitten, it is crucial to remain calm, limit movement, and seek medical attention immediately.
