Los Angeles County lifeguards had a busy weekend, rescuing nearly 2,000 people from the ocean as extreme heat drove crowds to local beaches.
The rescues occurred during a heat wave that led many to seek relief by the water. According to a post on Instagram by the Los Angeles County Lifeguards, the weekend saw a significant number of rescues, as well as 517 medical aids and 749 emergency vehicle responses.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Lifeguard Division shared a video on Instagram showing several rescues being carried out. The recent heat wave coincided with rough ocean conditions, including rip currents and powerful shorebreak waves, which increased coastal hazards. Officials advised beachgoers to take precautions and consult lifeguards about ocean conditions before entering the water.
The extreme heat warning remains in effect for areas like Lancaster and Palmdale, with heat advisories for much of the surrounding area. High surf is expected to continue through Wednesday, with waves reaching up to 7 feet. Beach visitors were warned of a high rip tide risk, and officials emphasized the importance of swimming parallel to the shoreline if caught in a rip current.
No fatalities were reported over the weekend, but lifeguards emphasized the need for caution as the hot weather and challenging ocean conditions persist.
