A pack of coyotes has taken over an abandoned construction site in West Hollywood causing concern among local residents.
The site, located at the corner of Romaine Street and North Spaulding Avenue, has been dubbed the “coyote condo” by neighbors due to the animals’ nightly howling and barking.
The construction project, which was intended to be a residential building, has been unfinished for several years. According to residents, the project halted about four years ago, leaving the structure open for the coyotes to inhabit. As reported by NBC Los Angeles, the city of West Hollywood is aware of the situation and has had a comprehensive Coyote Management and Coexistence Plan in place since 2018. This plan focuses on public education, prevention, and humane coexistence strategies.
Residents have mixed feelings about their new neighbors. While some, like Paddy Fallon, joke about the situation, others express concern for the safety of pets and children. Cindy Sorley, a local resident, shared her experiences with the coyotes, noting their presence late at night and the noise from their howling. “It’s been years,” Sorley said, describing the abandoned site as an eyesore.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife states that coyotes are native to the area and can adapt to various environments, including urban ones. They are known to consume a wide range of food, from rodents and birds to pet food and trash.
Residents have urged city officials to address the abandoned construction site and ensure the safety of both the coyotes and the community. The city continues to work with Los Angeles County agencies to monitor coyote activity and manage their behavior.
