LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Beachgoers were urged to use caution Wednesday along the coasts of Los Angeles and Orange counties as elevated surf and dangerous rip currents continued to create hazardous ocean conditions.
A beach hazards statement issued by the National Weather Service will remain in effect through late Wednesday night for Los Angeles County beaches, where breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet and hazardous swimming conditions were expected.
“There is an increased risk of ocean drowning,” forecasters said. “Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.”
A coastal flood advisory for the Malibu coast was scheduled to expire at 2 a.m. Wednesday after forecasters warned of minor flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas, including beaches, parking lots and walkways, during periods of high tide.
In Orange County, a beach hazards statement will remain in effect through Friday evening.
Surf of 3 to 5 feet, with occasional sets reaching 6 feet at south- facing beaches, was expected, along with a high risk of rip currents and strong longshore currents, forecasters said.
“A beach hazards statement for elevated surf means that waves will be high enough to cause danger to inexperienced swimmers in the water,” the weather agency said.
Forecasters advised swimmers to remain near lifeguards and use caution in the water.
