Voter ID Ballot Measure Proposed for California’s 2026 Election

A coalition of conservative lawmakers in California is working to introduce a ballot measure for the November 2026 election that would require voters to present government-issued identification. The proposal, led by Assemblymembers Carl DeMaio and Bill Essayli, along with Congressman Ken Calvert, aims to enhance election integrity in the state.

According to Daily News, advocates believe the measure will restore public confidence in elections, while critics argue it creates unnecessary barriers to voting. The initiative seeks to verify voter ID for any ballot counted and verify citizenship for voter registration.

The coalition, supported by Reform California, has cited polling data indicating strong bipartisan support for the measure, with 68% of Californians favoring voter ID requirements. The initiative mirrors practices in 36 other states and several countries, where voter ID laws are standard.

To qualify the measure for the ballot, the coalition must collect over one million signatures. They are recruiting volunteers and seeking financial support to achieve this goal. A recent town hall in Sacramento highlighted the campaign’s efforts to address concerns about election integrity in California. The coalition aims to implement these changes to align California’s election practices with those of other democracies worldwide.
