Vance Fires Back At Catholic Bishops’ Criticism Of ICE Raids

Vice President JD Vance fired back after the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops publicly criticized the Trump administration’s rule change to allow ICE raids in churches and schools last week.

“As a practicing Catholic, I was actually heartbroken by that statement,” Vance said during an interview with CBS News”Face the Nation airing Sunday (January 26) morning.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said the change was “turning places of care, healing, and solace into places of fear and uncertainty for those in need” and warned that it endangered “the trust between pastors” and “the people they serve.”

“I think that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops needs to actually look in the mirror a little bit and recognize that when they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants. Are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line?” Vance asked during the Face the Nation interview.

“If they’re worried about the humanitarian costs of immigration enforcement, let them talk about the children who have been sex trafficked because of the wide open border of Joe Biden,” he added of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Moderator Margaret Brennan then asked Vance if he believed the religious group was “actively hiding criminals from law enforcement.”

“I think the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has, frankly, not been a good partner in common sense immigration enforcement that the American people voted for, and I hope, again, as a devout Catholic, that they’ll do better,” he responded.

Brennan also pressed Vance on whether the immigration policy would lead to migrant parents being reluctant about sending their children to school.

“I desperately hope it has a chilling effect,” Vance responded, “on illegal immigrants coming into our country.”
