A 19-year-old Walmart employee was found dead inside a walk-in oven in the bakery department of a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The incident occurred on Saturday (October 19), and the police were alerted around 9:30 p.m. local time. The identity of the deceased woman has not been publicly disclosed by the police. The cause of her death remains unknown and is under investigation by the Halifax Regional Police.
The police described the investigation as “complex,” involving several partner agencies, and have warned that it may take a significant amount of time. The authorities are working in collaboration with Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to determine the cause and manner of death. As of now, it is unclear whether the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are criminal in nature.
The Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax has been in touch with the victim’s mother, who, along with her daughter, migrated from India to Canada two to three years ago. Balbir Singh, a representative of the society, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and is awaiting the results of the police investigation.
In response to the incident, Walmart has temporarily closed the store. A spokesperson for the company expressed their condolences, stating, “We are heartbroken, and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need.”
The company is providing virtual care and on-site support, including grief counseling, to store employees. The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration has issued a stop-work order for the bakery and a piece of equipment at the store.
