Team USA Dominates Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup Opener

In a thrilling start to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Team USA secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match marked the return of the World Cup to American soil for the first time since 1994, and the U.S. team did not disappoint the home crowd.

The United States took an early lead in the seventh minute when a pass from Christian Pulisic led to an own goal by Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla. Pulisic, who plays for AC Milan, was instrumental in the first half, providing an assist for Folarin Balogun‘s first goal in the 31st minute. Balogun, a dual national from England, added another goal in added time, bringing the score to 3-0 by halftime.

Despite a strong performance, Pulisic was substituted at halftime as a precaution after being kicked in the calf. He expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I’m really hoping that it’s nothing.” NBC News reported that Sebastian Berhalter replaced Pulisic for the second half.

Paraguay’s Mauricio Magalhães scored in the 73rd minute, giving the team a brief glimmer of hope. However, U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna sealed the victory with a stunning goal from outside the box in the final moments, bringing the final score to 4-1.

The victory sets a positive tone for Team USA as they prepare for their next match in Seattle. Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to rest key players like Pulisic reflects a strategic approach to ensure the team’s strength throughout the tournament.
