Progressive Lawmakers Hold Up Protest Signs During President Trump’s Speech

While President Donald Trump delivered an address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday (March 4) night, a group of progressive lawmakers held up protest signs.

The small hand-held signs with a black background and white lettering were distributed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, according to Politico. The signs had different statements, such as “Musk Steals,” “Save Medicaid,” “False,” and “Protect Veterans.”

They held up the signs as Trump spoke to the Democratic lawmakers in attendance.

“This is my fifth such speech to Congress, and once again, I look at the Democrats in front of me, and I realize there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy or to make them stand or smile or applaud,” Trump said.

“Nothing I can do,” the president added. “I could find a cure to the most devastating disease — a disease that would wipe out entire nations or announce the answers to the greatest economy in history — or the stoppage of crime to the lowest levels ever recorded. And these people sitting right here will not clap, will not stand, and certainly will not cheer for these astronomical achievements.”

Before the speech, Democratic leaders urged members of their caucus to be silent and respectful during Trump’s speech. At least one Democratic lawmaker, Rep. Al Green of Texas, ignored the directive and was escorted out by the Sergeant at Arms at the direction of House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Democratic Reps. Maxine Dexter and Andrea Salinas were also escorted out of the chamber.
