NHL Draft Begins Friday In Buffalo

The NHL is gearing up for its entry draft, set to begin on Friday (June 26) at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. The Toronto Maple Leafs hold the top pick and are widely expected to select Penn State winger Gavin McKenna, a standout player known for his high hockey IQ and impressive stats. McKenna, originally from Whitehorse, Yukon, recorded 51 points in 35 games during his freshman year at Penn State, making him a top contender for the first overall pick.

Following the Maple Leafs, the San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres, and New York Rangers hold the second through fifth picks, respectively. Buffalo, the host city, moved up to the fourth spot after trading defenseman Bowen Byram to Chicago earlier this week.

The draft will kick off with the first round on Friday at 7 p.m. ET, broadcast on ESPN, SN, and TVAS. Rounds two through seven will follow on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. ET. The event promises to be a pivotal moment for teams looking to bolster their rosters with fresh talent.

McKenna’s journey to the draft is notable for his dedication to his roots and family values, influenced by his grandfather, a member of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation. His story is one of resilience and commitment, drawing inspiration from his family’s history and personal experiences.

As the draft approaches, all eyes are on the Maple Leafs and their anticipated selection of McKenna, who is expected to make a significant impact in the NHL. For more details on the draft and top prospects, visit the NHL’s official draft page here.
