White House Commends SCOTUS Immigration Rulings

The White House has praised two significant Supreme Court decisions announced on Thursday (June 25), describing them as a “tremendous win.” According to Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, the rulings bolster the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten immigration policies.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Haitians and Syrians, allowing their deportation. TPS, initially granted due to natural disasters or conflicts in their home countries, had provided these individuals temporary legal protection and work authorization in the U.S. Jackson stated, “The Supreme Court affirmed what President Trump has always maintained: temporary protected status is, by definition, temporary.”

Another 6-3 ruling permits the Trump administration to revive an Obama-era policy known as “metering,” which allows border officials to turn away migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border before they can apply for asylum. This decision was met with criticism from Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who warned that “more people will die” as a result. The Hill reported that Justice Samuel Alito authored the majority opinions, emphasizing the temporary nature of TPS and the legal interpretation of “arrival” in the U.S.

The rulings have sparked strong reactions, particularly from Democratic leaders. The BBC noted that New York Governor Kathy Hochul and other officials criticized the decisions, pledging local resistance and support for affected communities. Meanwhile, Fox News highlighted concerns from Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., about the potential impact on the U.S. healthcare system, which relies on Haitian workers.

The rulings mark a significant step in the Trump administration’s immigration policy, with the White House and the Department of Homeland Security celebrating the decisions as victories for the rule of law.
