Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, has endorsed Angie Nixon in her bid for Florida governor. Sanders announced his support on Thursday (August 20), praising Nixon as a candidate who will fight for working people and challenge the “greed of the billionaire class.” Nixon, a Democratic socialist, recently won her primary in an unexpected victory over Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council aide known for his role in President Trump’s first impeachment.
Nixon’s victory is seen as part of a broader wave of progressive wins across the country. Despite being outspent significantly, she secured her primary win by more than 12 points. Sanders highlighted her success as proof that “organized people can take on organized money — and win.” According to The Hill, Nixon expressed her gratitude for Sanders’ endorsement, stating, “Senator Bernie Sanders has been a champion for working people his entire career, and I’m proud to have stood alongside him in 2016 and to carry that fight forward today.”
Nixon will face Republican Ashley Moody in the November election. Moody, who was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, has a significant financial advantage, having raised $14 million compared to Nixon’s less than $1 million. Despite this, Nixon’s campaign has gained momentum, raising $1 million in just 48 hours after her primary win.
Politico reports that Nixon’s progressive platform includes Medicare for All and affordable housing. Her campaign aims to energize the Democratic base, particularly Black voters and young people. Sanders, a leading voice in the progressive movement, believes Nixon represents the future of the Democratic Party.
In November, Nixon will attempt to overcome Florida’s Republican voter advantage. Moody has criticized Nixon’s views, but Nixon remains focused on building a grassroots campaign. As reported by USA Today, if Nixon wins, she would become the first member of the Democratic Socialists of America to serve in the Senate.
