California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that federal agents have questioned his friends and associates, as well as those of his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
Newsom claims that President Donald Trump is using the Justice Department to target him as a political adversary. While the full scope of the investigation remains unclear, Newsom’s aides suggest that part of the focus is on Jennifer Siebel Newsom and her nonprofit groups.
In a video statement, Newsom expressed his belief that the investigation is politically motivated. According to ABC7 News, President Trump mentioned a “Fraud Investigation of California” on Truth Social but provided no specific details. Newsom’s office responded by highlighting the governor’s efforts to combat fraud, stating that he has blocked over $125 billion in fraudulent activities and arrested numerous criminals. Newsom also said in the statement that he is ‘considering a run for President’.
The investigation comes amid tensions between California and the Trump administration. Newsom has been vocal in opposing federal actions, particularly regarding immigration policies. In January, Newsom urged California law enforcement to investigate potential crimes involving federal agents, following incidents involving federal officers in Minnesota and California.
