Residents and businesses in Los Angeles County have until October 15, 2025, to file their federal and state taxes, thanks to a disaster declaration following January’s wildfires. This extension applies to individual and business tax returns and payments originally due on April 15, 2025.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) have both issued guidance on this relief. According to the IRS, the postponement affects various tax-related deadlines, including estimated tax payments and other time-sensitive actions. The relief is automatically applied to taxpayers with an IRS address of record in the affected area.
The FTB advises affected taxpayers to indicate “Los Angeles County Fire” on their returns to alert the agency. This extension is exclusive to Los Angeles County, and those outside the area must adhere to standard deadlines.
The IRS will waive penalties for late filings and payments during this period. Taxpayers who receive penalty notices should contact the IRS for resolution. The IRS also offers additional relief options, including disaster-related casualty loss claims and special retirement plan distributions.
