Jimmy Gomez, a Democratic Representative from Los Angeles, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee following allegations of sexual misconduct.
The investigation began after the New York Post reported that Gomez, 51, was seen kissing a much younger congressional aide in 2023. The incident reportedly took place at a party hosted by former Representative Eric Swalwell.
In a statement to CNN, Gomez acknowledged making “personal mistakes” outside his marriage and apologized to his family. He emphasized that his actions were consensual and did not violate House ethics rules. “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most,” Gomez said.
The investigation has uncovered additional allegations of misconduct, further complicating Gomez’s political standing. Despite the controversy, Gomez has not indicated plans to resign and has expressed his intention to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Gomez’s political future faces uncertainty as he is challenged by Angela Gonzales-Torres in the upcoming election. Gonzales-Torres, backed by the Justice Democrats, has criticized Gomez for his political affiliations and called for accountability in light of the investigation.
Gomez, who was first elected to Congress in 2017, founded the Congressional Dads Caucus and has been an advocate for family-friendly policies. However, his recent admission and the ongoing investigation have put his reputation and political career at risk.
