How Compton Unified Is Defying The Trend Of Poor Student Performance

When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down schools across the country, millions of students moved to online learning, and because of that, students fell behind especially in feading and math.

Since the pandemic ended, schools have poured federal aid and local relief money into their curriculum to try to help students catch up academically, but according to the most recent 2024 studies, students are still behind, some up to a full grade behind in reading and math. But amid all the negative news, there are some bright spots, and one of them is right here in Southern California.

Why are they achieving when other schools aren’t? Amy spoke to Dr. Darin Brawley, Superintendent of Compton Unified School District about how Compton is bucking the national trend of low student performance.
