A U.S. fighter jet crashed at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska on Tuesday (January 28). The F-35 Lightning II fell out of the sky just before 1 p.m. and crashed within the fence line of the base, the 354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs said in a statement.
Officials said that the pilot was able to eject from the aircraft and is safe. He was transported to Bassett Army Hospital for further evaluation.
“Our people are our most important resource, and we are committed in ensuring their safety and security,” said Colonel Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing. “I can assure you the United States Air Force will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident to minimize the chances of such occurrences from happening again.”
Authorities did not say what caused the crash.
A heart-stopping video captured the moment when the F-35 plummeted out of the sky and slammed into the ground, causing a large explosion.
