Grammys Add Five New Categories for 2027 Awards

The Grammys are set to introduce five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, reflecting the evolving music landscape.

The changes, effective for the ceremony on Sunday, February 7, 2027, will air across ABC, Disney+, and Hulu.

The new categories include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, and Best Latin Song. These additions aim to provide a more precise recognition for diverse music genres and styles. The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will honor excellence in Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, with awards given to performing artists. The Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance will focus on contemporary R&B works by duos, groups, or collaborations between artists.

The Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category will recognize singles and tracks that do not fit into current pop music forms, while Best Traditional Folk Album will honor albums of traditional folk recordings. Best Latin Song will celebrate songwriters of new Latin songs predominantly in Spanish.

The introduction of these categories comes as part of the Grammys’ annual process of accepting proposals from its membership body. According to ABC7 News, Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. expressed excitement about the changes, stating, “2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music.”

In addition to new categories, the Grammys have updated their voting process with Ballot Plus, allowing eligible members to vote in up to 15 categories based on verified credits. The eligibility criteria for Best New Artist have been adjusted to allow up to four submissions, and the threshold for new recordings on eligible albums has been lowered from 75% to 66%, as reported by Grammy.com.

These updates aim to enhance the recognition of diverse music genres and adapt to the changing dynamics of the music industry. For more details on the changes, visit the New Times.
