Gardener Discovers Four Russian-Style Grenades Hidden In Bushes Near Park

A gardener in California made a shocking discovery last week. While tending to some bushes near Baldwin Park in Los Angeles, the gardener uncovered four Soviet-style F-1 hand grenades.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched the bomb squad to the area. Testing showed that three of the four grenades were inert, while the fourth was a functioning explosive device. The bomb squad took the grenade and rendered it safe.

“#LASD SEB Tactical Bomb Techs on scene in the city of Baldwin Park in response to 4 hand grenades found. All four grenades were rendered safe. Los Angeles St. reopened. Neighborhood safe,” the Special Enforcement Bureau of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said on X.

Sgt. Jose Eguia from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Arson Explosives Detail told KTTV that the grenades were older, which made them more dangerous.

“By the appearance of them, they’re very old,” Eguia said. “Some of them were deteriorating. They seemed a little unstable. If you don’t know how a hand grenade functions, it could be very dangerous.”

Investigators are working with the FBI to determine who the grenades belonged to and how they ended up in the bushes near a public park.
