Funeral Services For Iran’s Late Ayatollah Announced

Funeral services have been announced for Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S. and Israeli attack on February 28. State media reported today that his funeral procession will commence in Tehran on July 4, with burial in Mashhad on July 9.

The 86-year-old leader, who led Iran for nearly 37 years, will be honored with a three-day public funeral, as reported by The Times of Israel. The events will take place in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, with up to 20 million people expected to attend.

The funeral was initially scheduled for March 4 but was postponed due to ongoing conflict. According to i24 News, preparations are underway for the funeral, which coincides with the Islamic month of Muharram.

Khamenei’s death has left Iran in a state of political uncertainty. A leadership council has temporarily assumed his duties, as reported by Reuters. The country is navigating its biggest leadership challenge in decades.
