Nearly 40,000 bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief eye drops are being recalled nationwide due to concerns about sterility, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The voluntary recall was initiated by Prestige Consumer Healthcare—the company behind the product—on Monday (July 29), and was later classified as a Class II recall by the FDA on Wednesday (August 14), meaning serious health consequences are considered unlikely but temporary or reversible medical issues could occur.cccccccc
The recall affects 15-milliliter bottles from lot code 2552A with an expiration date of September 30, 2027. These drops, which are marketed for relief from itchiness, redness, and other eye irritations, were distributed nationwide at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, and through online sellers like Amazon.
The FDA stated the recall was issued because the manufacturer could not guarantee the sterility of the product, which raises the risk that the drops could be contaminated with bacteria or fungi. So far, no contamination has been detected and no adverse health events have been reported.
Sterility is especially important for eye drops since any contamination can lead to infections, as the eyes have fewer natural defenses against germs. Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled bottles immediately. Those who experience symptoms such as pain, swelling, discharge, unusual redness, or changes in vision after using the product should contact a health care professional.
