A California condor named Pey-noh-pey-o-wok’ (Spirit Bird), hatched and raised at the Los Angeles Zoo, has died from lead poisoning. The young bird was part of the Yurok Tribe’s Northern California Condor Restoration Program and had been flying free for just over three months before its death in January.
The Yurok Tribe announced the tragic news, highlighting the ongoing threat of lead poisoning to the endangered species. Lead poisoning often occurs when condors ingest spent lead ammunition while scavenging carcasses. This incident underscores the importance of using non-lead ammunition to protect wildlife.
The Yurok Tribe’s program aims to restore the California condor population in Northern California. Despite this setback, the tribe remains committed to its mission. They continue to work with conservationists to ensure the survival of the species.
