SANTA CLARITA (CNS) – Firefighters are battling a third-alarm blaze Monday morning at a commercial area in Santa Clarita.
They were called at 2:55 a.m. to the 24000 block of North Main Street, in the Newhall area, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Pauline McGee told City News Service.
The heavy flames and smoke led to a second-alarm being called at 3:07 a.m. so that more fire units would join the battle and a third-alarm was called at 4:42 a.m., McGee said.
Firefighters had to take up defensive positions around the fire and train water on the flames from aerial ladder trucks to “surround and drown” the fire and protect nearby structures, she said.
As of 5:30 a.m., the firefighters continued their assault but were “making progress,” McGee said.
Live on scene reports showed firefighters battling active flames looming up from the restaurant property at 6:40 a.m.
The structures involved were a theater, restaurant and body shop, she said.
No injuries were reported.
Video from the scene showed heavy smoke with the glow of flames showing through the haze.
