Shelley Fabares, beloved actress known for her roles in ‘The Donna Reed Show’ and ‘Coach,’ passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday (August 22) in Los Angeles. Her family, including her husband, Mike Farrell, confirmed she died surrounded by loved ones, though no cause of death was given.
Fabares was born on January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, California, and began acting at age three. She made her television debut at age 10 on ‘The Loretta Young Show.’ Her breakout role came as Mary Stone on ‘The Donna Reed Show’ from 1958 to 1963. During this time, she recorded the hit song ‘Johnny Angel,’ which topped the Billboard charts in 1962.
In the 1960s, Fabares starred alongside Elvis Presley in three films: ‘Girl Happy,’ ‘Spinout,’ and ‘Clambake.’ She later appeared in the TV movie ‘Brian’s Song’ and had a recurring role on ‘One Day at a Time.’ Her most notable later role was Christine Armstrong on the sitcom ‘Coach,’ earning her two Emmy nominations.
Fabares was a dedicated advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness, influenced by her mother’s struggle with the disease. In 2000, she underwent a liver transplant after battling progressive liver failure, a journey she shared in an interview with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Her family described her as a source of love, strength, and laughter, noting her remarkable ability to make people feel valued. Fabares is survived by her husband and two stepchildren.
