Military Training in California Cities for World Cup Prep

Recent military-style training exercises in Southern California cities have startled residents with unexpected low-flying helicopters and simulated explosions.

These activities are part of preparations for upcoming international events, including the FIFA World Cup, set to begin in Los Angeles on Thursday and run through July 19.

According to FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller, the exercises are a collaborative effort involving federal, state, and local agencies. They aim to ensure readiness for the influx of visitors and potential security challenges associated with the World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics. Eimiller emphasized that such training is routine, involving specialized units like SWAT teams and bomb technicians.

The exercises, which have taken place in cities like Pasadena, Irvine, Long Beach, and Industry, have drawn mixed reactions. Some residents expressed concern over the lack of advance notice, while others were unfazed. In Long Beach, the abandoned Golden Sails Hotel served as a training site, with activities running from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Some residents found the experience alarming, comparing it to being in a conflict zone.

Local officials have received numerous inquiries from residents seeking more information about the exercises. The FBI is considering broader public outreach to inform communities about future training activities. As Southern California gears up for these major events, officials stress the importance of preparedness to ensure safety and security.
