Reports: U.S. and Iran Reach Deal, Awaiting Trump’s Nod

The United States and Iran have reportedly reached a draft agreement to extend the current ceasefire, pending final approval from President Donald Trump. The proposed 60-day memorandum of understanding aims to facilitate more in-depth negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

According to multiple reports, the deal would require the U.S. to lift its blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and for Iran to remove all naval mines within 30 days. This development follows recent tensions, including accusations from U.S. Central Command that Iran violated the ceasefire by launching a ballistic missile toward Kuwait.

The agreement, if approved, would guarantee unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport. In exchange, Iran has committed not to pursue nuclear weapons and to engage in talks about its enriched uranium stockpile. Additionally, the U.S. would discuss potential sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

While the deal presents a significant diplomatic step forward, it faces potential challenges. Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, have expressed skepticism about the negotiations, and some Iranian lawmakers have voiced concerns about the terms. Furthermore, the deal’s success hinges on President Trump’s approval, which remains uncertain due to his unpredictable stance on foreign policy matters.

The memorandum also proposes a phased approach, with an initial signing ceremony expected to take place in Pakistan. However, the U.S. has dismissed some Iranian media reports about the deal’s specifics as fabrications.

As negotiations continue, both nations are under pressure to address regional security concerns, including the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Iranian-backed groups in Lebanon. The outcome of these talks could have significant implications for the Middle East’s stability and the global economy.
