YouTube To Mark Realistic-Looking Videos That Are Made By AI

YouTube is taking significant steps to enhance transparency for its users by implementing more prominent labels on AI-generated videos. Starting this week, the platform will automatically label content that features “significant photorealistic AI use,” according to a recent blog post by YouTube. This initiative aims to help viewers easily identify when a video is AI-generated.

Previously, YouTube relied on creators to disclose AI usage, but now the platform will use internal systems to detect and label such content. If a creator does not disclose AI use, but YouTube’s systems detect it, a label will be applied automatically. These labels will appear directly below the video player for long-form videos and as an overlay for YouTube Shorts.

YouTube’s head of editorial and creator liaison, Rene Ritchie, explained in a video that the goal is to provide “context at a glance” so viewers know immediately if a video was made with AI. The labels will not affect how videos are recommended or monetized, but aim to give viewers the right information at the right time.

Creators who believe their content was incorrectly flagged can adjust the disclosure status in YouTube Studio. However, labels will remain permanent for videos created using YouTube’s AI tools or those containing C2PA metadata indicating full AI generation.

The move comes as AI tools become more prevalent across social media, raising concerns about misinformation. YouTube’s new labeling system is designed to balance transparency with creator control, ensuring that viewers are informed without impacting content creators’ earnings or video recommendations.
