Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that she will not be running for president in 2028. During an interview at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Thursday (May 28), Whitmer told WJBK-TV’s Roop Raj that she plans to take a break after leaving office. She emphasized that while there will be a “robust group of people running for president,” she will not be among them.
Whitmer, a two-term governor, has been a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, often mentioned as a potential presidential candidate. Despite her popularity, with a 52.2% approval rating, Whitmer expressed her desire to step back and not “jump right into something.” She noted receiving advice from former government officials to take some time off after her term ends.
The governor’s decision comes amid speculation about other potential candidates for the 2028 presidential race. Figures like former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have also been discussed as possible contenders, though none have formally announced their intentions.
Whitmer’s announcement marks a significant moment as she has been on the short list of potential presidential candidates since at least 2020. Her political instincts have been closely aligned with the Democratic Party’s direction, but she seems content with her decision to not pursue a presidential run in the next election cycle.
