The Sandy Fire, which erupted on Monday around 10:45 a.m. in Simi Valley, has led to evacuation orders for over 43,000 residents.
Fueled by gusty winds, the fire quickly spread, destroying a home on Trickling Brook Court and two vehicles parked outside. As of Tuesday night, the fire has scorched nearly 1,700 acres, with firefighters achieving 15% containment by Wednesday morning.
The Ventura County Fire Department has deployed 869 firefighters to battle the blaze, which remains a challenge due to unpredictable winds. Firefighters are focused on building containment lines and dousing hot spots to prevent further spread.
Residents under evacuation warnings are prepared to leave, with some choosing to stay and monitor the situation. Tadd Wooton, a local resident, told KTLA, “We’ve got a good fire break here, so we’re not leaving.” Meanwhile, Chris Martinez expressed gratitude for the firefighters, stating, “They are truly one of our greatest heroes.”
The Simi Valley Unified School District has closed all campuses for Wednesday due to the fire. The cause of the Sandy Fire is under investigation, with initial reports suggesting a spark from a tractor hitting a rock. Authorities continue to update evacuation orders and advisories through the Ventura County website.
