UC Workers Plan Strike, Disrupting Services Across Campuses

More than 40,000 University of California (UC) workers are poised to strike on Thursday, potentially disrupting services across all campuses and medical centers.

The workers, represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299, are demanding higher wages, lower healthcare costs, and negotiations over housing expenses.

The strike could delay medical appointments and limit campus dining operations, although UC hospitals will remain open with contingency staffing. According to the Los Angeles Times, union leaders have stated that the strike will continue until their demands are met.

The union’s decision comes after more than two years of contract negotiations and follows several previous strikes. UC has offered a package that includes up to 34% pay increases over three years, a $2,000 ratification bonus, and caps on healthcare premium increases. However, AFSCME contends that these offers do not adequately address cost-of-living pressures, especially in high-cost areas like Los Angeles and the Bay Area.

UC Santa Cruz’s Interim Campus Provost, Paul Koch, warned of “noticeable impacts” on health services, transportation, and dining. Dining halls will operate with minimized staffing, and the Student Health Center will offer reduced services. The Lookout Santa Cruz reported that the strike is a last resort for the union, which has filed unfair labor practice complaints against UC.

The union argues that many members are struggling with housing costs, with some resorting to sleeping in cars to be near work. They also claim that the university’s wage increase proposal is misleading and does not benefit all members equally.

Negotiations between UC and AFSCME are ongoing, with both sides seeking a resolution. The strike highlights the broader issue of affordability for UC employees, particularly in expensive real estate markets.
