L.A. Zoo Celebrates First Vulture Chick from New Habitat

The Los Angeles Zoo has announced the successful hatching of a Cape vulture chick, marking the first major breeding success in its new habitat. The chick, which hatched on March 14, is a significant milestone for the zoo’s conservation efforts. The Cape vulture habitat, opened in February 2025, was designed to mimic the birds’ natural environment and encourage breeding.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the zoo’s director of animal care, Dominick Dorsa II, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “Bringing a vulnerable species into the world is always a cause for celebration, but this chick is especially meaningful.” Cape vultures, native to southern Africa, are listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to threats such as habitat loss and human activities.

The chick will remain under the care of the zoo’s animal team until it is strong enough to join the public exhibit in the Animals of Africa section. Visitors can currently observe the adult vultures. The zoo’s efforts are part of a broader conservation initiative through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Saving Animals From Extinction program, which aims to protect African vulture populations.

The Eastsider LA reported that the successful hatching is a testament to the zoo’s meticulous planning and dedication to creating a suitable environment for the vultures. Curator of Birds Rose Legato expressed excitement, saying, “Welcoming a Cape vulture chick is a thrilling moment for our team and a beacon of hope for African vultures.”

The chick is expected to grow into an adult with a wingspan of up to 8.5 feet, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem as a scavenger. This success story highlights the zoo’s commitment to wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting vulnerable species.
